Tech tip - Save Gas by Remote Computing

Power of the Memo Pad

With the escalating cost of gasoline we all want to optimize every trip in our cars as best we can. Did you know you can avoid making extra trips into the office just to access your work computer? You can easily log in to your office desktop from home or from a laptop anywhere you there is wireless accessibility!

This month we have been testing a great remote computing tool called Log Me In. We also want to share with you a new program called See Too that allows two computers to watch a personal video at the same time and type comments to each other in real time. Both programs are free to use, however Log Me In has a paid version as well.

Log Me In
LogMeIn is a free remote computing tool that gives you complete control over your computer. In my tests it was faster than Microsoft’s Remote Desktop tool. Where Remote Desktop needs a computer whiz to set it up, LogMeIn requires no expertise at all.

All you have to do is install a small program on the host computer. The remote computers access the host computer through a web browser like Internet Explorer or Firefox. The program also let’s you change the screen resolution and colors on the fly. If your host computer has 2 monitors, the program gives you access to both monitors one at a time.

LogMeIn also has some neat collaboration features as well. You can use a laser pointer, a whiteboard where you can draw all over the screen and a chatting feature. This is great if you are helping someone remotely.

The program also offers a paid version called Log Me In Pro.  The Pro version let's you Drag and Drop files between the connected computers. It also gives you access to your printers giving you the ability to printer remotely. You can also host a meeting giving you view or full control.

SeeToo
Sharing videos on the internet has become very easy using YouTube or numerous other services. What if you do not want the world to see your personal videos? You only want a selected other party to be able to watch them. This is where the SeeToo service comes in.

SeeToo is a Web-based program that allows individuals to invite friends and family to watch home videos with them in real time. Unlike YouTube and other services, there is no 100MB size restriction that you have to worry about.

The process is really easy. Download the SeeToo application on your computer. SeeToo is a smart program that compresses your video and streams it from your computer to the SeeToo website. All you have to do is invite the other party to join in watching the video.

SeeToo never saves your videos. Once the viewing session ends, your video is no longer available. The great feature is that the invited party does not need to download anything. All they have to do is click on the link that you emailed them and they can start watching the video with you. As the video streams, both parties can type instant messages to each other.

Save gas this summer by connecting to your office PC remotely and sharing videos with loved ones over the internet. Your checkbook will thank you.
